Popular Volunteer Driver and Trustee Clive Hay Retires

Cambridge Dial-a-Ride, a Not-for-Profit entity which provides an essential minibus service transporting people with mobility issues in the Cambridgeshire area, bids farewell to one of its long serving and popular volunteer drivers, Clive Hay.

Joining as a volunteer over 12 years ago, Clive soon became one of the Charity’s popular drivers, regularly taking one of the minibuses out 2 days a week transporting members to destinations such as health appointments, social events and day centres to shopping trips or to visit garden centres.  Just like Cambridge Dial-a-Ride’s team of paid drivers, volunteers are fully checked and trained to use all the on-board equipment including hydraulic lifts to accommodate wheelchairs, frames and those passengers unable to access transport via steps or stairs to safely take members to their designated destinations.

Says Clive – “I was introduced to this fantastic charity back in 2011 having spent 9 years as a volunteer advisor for the Citizens Advice Bureau. Whilst visiting a local Christmas show, I was introduced to a Cambridge dial-a -Ride driver via a mutual friend who worked for one of our Funders. As I enjoy driving and being part of a team, I thought this would be an interesting and worthwhile opportunity and joined as a volunteer driver and have been there ever since.  In 2016 I was invited by the Board to become a Trustee and Director where I took on the role of Company Secretary, attending meetings and assisting the Board to run and grow this vital Cambridge service.  I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being part of this friendly and dedicated team of people whose ethos is to help, support and prevent loneliness of those who would be unable to get out and about without this service.  I will miss everyone from my fellow Board members to the wonderful staff and of course the members I’ve had the pleasure to serve”.

Adds Bill Hughes, Chairman – “Clive has been a fantastic, enthusiastic, and flexible member of Cambridge Dial-a-Ride with his input, not only from his driving, but his knowledge and advice with logistics, vehicles and his very accurate and timely Company secretary duties.  We are very sorry to see him go but from everyone here, we’d like to thank Clive for his service and wish him a happy, long and enjoyable retirement – he’s truly deserved it”.

If you or someone you know has some time on their hands and would like to consider becoming a volunteer driver, please call one of the team on 01223 506335 where you can find out about joining a friendly and supportive team to support our regular minibus drivers.

Alternatively, if you or someone you care for or support would be interested in joining or finding more about our services, please give one of the team a call on 01223 506335 where they will be happy to discuss your transport needs and explain our membership scheme and fare pricing structure.  Concessionary prices are offered to all members who hold a current Concessionary Bus Pass issued by the Council.

New members will also be able to take advantage of our newly launched Saturday trips out to the seaside, local garden centres and other places of interested which are advertised on our website.

Cambridge Dial-a-Ride is a non-profit organisation providing local transport services that are safe, affordable and accessible to individuals and community groups who have difficulty in accessing public transport.  We very much look forward to hearing from you.
